A Night With Janis Joplin, the sensational musical about the legendary rock and roll singer is coming to the Keller Auditorium!
Janis Lyn Joplin was born in Port Arthur (Texas) in 1943 and was a singer and songwriter. Her musical style spanned the genres psychedelic rock (a style of rock music - inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture - that attempts to replicate and enhance the mind altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD, by using novelty recording techniques, electronic instruments or effects), hard rock (a loosely defined subgenre of rock music featuring heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards), and blues rock (a fusion genre combining elements of blues and rock, characterized by bluesy improvisation, the twelve bar blues, extended boogie jams typically focused on the electric guitar player, and often a heavier, riff oriented sound). Her breakthrough came when she performed (as the lead singer of psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company) at the 1967 Monterey International Pop Music Festival. It wasn't long before she embarked on a solo career with her own backing bands (first the Kozmic Blues Band and then the Full Tilt Boogie Band) and released 2 albums. She passed away in 1970 from an accidental heroin overdose.
