The musical features an impressive ensemble of artists who bring to the life the story of a French peasant named Jean Valjean, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister's starving child. Its lyrics are by French lyricist Jean-Marc Natel and Tunisian musical theatre lyricist and librettist Alain Boublil (who also wrote its book). Its first production premiered in Paris in 1980 and it made its Broadway debut 7 years later (with more than $4 million advance ticket sales).
