The Sound of Music, the sensational and award winning musical based on the famous 1949 memoir is coming to the Keller Auditorium!
The musical is based on a memoir (titled The Story of the Trapp Family Singers and written by Maria Augusta von Trapp) that describes the von Trapp family’s beginnings in Salzburg (Austria) to their adventures in America where they escaped from Nazi invaded Europe. It features an impressive ensemble of artists who tell the story of a governess who falls in love with the children under her care (and eventually their widowed father), and of their escape from Austria. The musical’s first production premiered on Broadway (at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre) in 1959 and its West End debut took place at the Palace Theatre in 1961. The former won 5 Tony Awards (for Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Conductor and Musical Director, and Best Scenic Design of a Musical), an Outer Critics Circle Awards, and a Theatre World Award. The musical’s 1998 Broadway revival was nominated for a Tony Award (for Best Revival of a Musical), a Drama Desk Award (for Outstanding Orchestrations), a Drama League Award (for Distinguished Production of a Revival), and for 4 Outer Critics Circle Awards.
