Tom Jones (birth name Thomas Jones Woodward) was born in Glamorgan (South Wales) in 1940 and he developed his unique singing style from American soul music. He was influenced by artists such as Little Richard, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson and Brook Benton, and Elvis Presley. He’s had a stellar career with 40 studio albums, 5 live albums, 16 compilation albums, 20 video albums, 104 singles, and he’s sold over 100 million records. He’s received many accolades including a Grammy Award (for Best New Artist), a Golden Globe Award (for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy), a MTV Video Music Award (for Breakthrough Video), 2 Brit Awards (for Best British Male Artist and Outstanding Contribution to Music), and 2 Grammy nominations (for Contemporary Rock and Roll Male Vocal Performance and Contemporary Rock and Roll Single). He got his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989 and 10 years later, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). In 2006 he was knighted for his contribution to music and in March 2016, a new musical (Tom: A Story of Tom Jones) based on his life and recordings debuted at the Wales Millennium Centre.
